DFW Storm & Hail Damage Roofing

Your Roof Took a Hit.
Here's What You Need to Know.

Hail and storm damage is the #1 roofing issue in DFW — and most of it is invisible from the ground. If a storm has rolled through your neighborhood in the last 30 days, there's a real chance your roof has damage you can't see. Here's what to do about it.

Why DFW Homeowners Can't Afford to Wait After a Storm

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex sits squarely in the heart of "Hail Alley" — one of the highest hail-frequency corridors in the entire United States. Unlike states where a significant hailstorm is a once-a-decade event, DFW homeowners can face multiple damaging storms every single year, typically from March through June.

What makes this particularly dangerous is that hail damage to roofing is almost always invisible from the ground. You walk outside after a storm, look up, and the roof looks fine. But up close, the shingles may be bruised, cracked, or stripped of the protective granules that shield your home from UV rays and water infiltration.

Left unaddressed, storm damage accelerates dramatically. A roof that survives a hailstorm with minor damage can fail completely within 12–18 months as water finds its way through weakened shingles, rots the decking, and causes interior damage that costs far more to repair than the roof itself.

The window to act is short. Most roofing professionals recommend getting an inspection within 30 days of a storm — both to document the damage accurately and to ensure your roof doesn't deteriorate further before repairs are made.

What Hail Actually Does to Your Roof

Not all hail is created equal. The damage hail causes depends on its size, the speed it falls, and the age and type of your roofing material. Here's what different hail sizes typically do to residential roofing in DFW.

🔵

¾" — Marble Size

Accelerates granule loss on older shingles. May look minor but removes the UV-protective coating that extends shingle life. Older roofs with worn granules are especially vulnerable.

🟡

1" — Quarter Size

Dents metal components — gutters, vents, flashing, and ridge caps. Causes significant granule loss on asphalt shingles, exposing the mat underneath to UV degradation and moisture.

🟠

1.5" — Golf Ball Size

Actively cracks and bruises shingles. At this size, damage to ridge caps, skylights, and soft metals is nearly guaranteed. Many shingles will show visible fractures on the surface.

🔴

2"+ — Egg to Baseball

Causes severe structural damage to virtually any roofing material. Punctures are possible on older roofs. Immediate inspection and likely full replacement is the standard outcome.

The Damage You Can't See From the Ground

This is the part that catches most DFW homeowners off guard. Hail damage is rarely obvious from street level. The types of damage that most frequently lead to roof failure are the ones that require an up-close, trained-eye inspection to identify.

1 Granule Loss

Asphalt shingles are coated with granules that reflect UV rays and protect the asphalt mat from heat and moisture. Hail knocks granules loose, shortening shingle life by years. From the ground, the roof looks intact. From 12 inches away, the bare mat is exposed.

2 Shingle Bruising

A hailstone strike can bruise the asphalt mat beneath the granule surface without cracking the shingle visibly. The bruise creates a soft spot that fails under thermal expansion and contraction over the next 1–2 seasons — leading to cracking and leaks.

3 Cracked Underlayment

High-velocity hail can fracture the waterproof underlayment beneath the shingles without visibly damaging the shingle above. Water infiltrates during the next rain event, reaches the decking, and begins rot before you ever see a water stain on your ceiling.

4 Damaged Ridge Caps

Ridge caps — the shingles at the peak of your roof — take the most direct hits from hail. Cracked or dislodged ridge caps are one of the most common entry points for water after a storm and one of the easiest things to miss from the ground.

5 Damaged Flashing

Metal flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights is highly susceptible to hail impact. Dented or cracked flashing loses its watertight seal, directing rainwater into the joints between the roof surface and these penetrations.

6 Gutter & Soft Metal Damage

Dented gutters and downspouts are often the most visible indicator that hail hit your property hard enough to damage your roof. If your gutters are dented, your shingles almost certainly took a hit too.

Warning Signs Your Roof Was Damaged — Even If It Looks Fine

You don't need to get on your roof to spot signs that something might be wrong. Here are the indicators DFW homeowners should watch for after any significant storm.

Dented Gutters or Downspouts

If hail was large enough to dent your gutters, it was large enough to damage your shingles. This is the #1 street-level indicator.

Granules in Your Gutters

After cleaning or a heavy rain, check your gutters and downspout discharge. An unusual amount of granule debris is a clear sign of shingle damage.

Water Stains on Ceilings

Yellow or brown stains on interior ceilings are a sign that water has already found a path through your roof. Don't wait — this means active infiltration.

Damaged Window Screens or Sills

Torn window screens and dented sills indicate the hail that hit your home was significant. Same storm, same roof exposure.

Missing or Lifted Shingles

High winds accompanying storms can lift or remove shingles entirely. Even a single missing shingle creates an open path for water into your decking.

A Neighbor Getting Their Roof Done

Roofing work on neighboring homes after a storm is one of the most reliable indicators that the storm caused widespread damage on your street.
